I’ve been using Blender's Video Editor to produce planetarium content almost exclusively since about 2007. It has come a very long way, especially recently, but I have always found it to be especially good at handling frame-wise footage (e.g., jpeg, tga, etc). It also tends to be have good performance when editing on high resolution frames.
